Looking for something a little more exciting than your typical fine dining establishment? Look no further, but be forewarned; these weird restaurants certainly are not for everyone. Hopefully you’ll see that dinner doesn’t have to be boring, and there are weird restaurants of all kinds all around the world.

1. Alcatraz (Japan)

Step into your cell at the Alcatraz Restaurant in Japan where your evening begins with a lethal injection (a cocktail). You’re surrounded by servers posing as doctors and nurses, and to get their attention, you bang on your cell door. Don’t be surprised if you suddenly find yourself in darkness. They shut down all the lights several times throughout the evening, and there are even demonstrations played out. Chow down on Penis Sausage or Dead Chicken, and be ready to streak down the cell block in your wheelchair.

2. Open Desert Restaurant Australia

This open desert restaurant, Sounds of Silence, is found in Australia. It’s more than just dining, it’s a four hour experience with star gazing, story telling, and delightful dining. Your evening includes a buffet, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), entertainment, desert, and transportation to and from Voyages Ayers Rock Resort.

3. Dinner in the Sky (Around the World)

Turn the other way if you’re afraid of heights. Dinner in the Sky has you dining 50 meters above the ground served by a professional wait-staff. Dinner in the Sky can be reserved for up to eight hour time chunks, and even personalized. Want your logo on the bottom of the platform? You can do that. Accommodating up to 22 people at one time, Dinner in the Sky prides itself on safety. It can be set up just about anywhere, and has received approval for use in over 15 countries, including the U.S.

4. Robotic Staffed Restaurant (Germany)

Forget incompetent servers who forget your order. At this restaurant in Germany, you place your order through a touch screen and your food is auto-delivered through robotic rails. Watch the video below to see the robotic staff in action. I don’t know about you, but I think this could be good or bad. What do you do if your order is screwed up? Does it come with a notepad and pen for you to send a complaint back up? Do you talk to someone through the monitor?

5. Under the Sea (Republic of Maldives)

The Ithaa restaurant on Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, you literally dine under the sea. This isn’t just some mere illusion. You’re surrounded by glass, with a complete 180 degrees view of ocean life swimming around you. Very beautiful, but maybe a little nauseating if you have any fear of water, sharks, drowning, or recurring dreams of being crushed by water. No reservations for kids under 12.

6. Smallest Restaurant in the World? (Finland)

This restaurant in Finland consists of a small cabin nestled into beautiful flora. There’s ONE table on the inside of this restaurant. If you’re claustrophobic, it may help to use the second table outside on the porch. That’s it. Two tables.

7. Absolute Blind Dining (London)

Explore your senses by dining completely in the dark. Your servers and guide staff are all blind, as the owners believe they are best suited to the job. They’re carefully trained, but they already have good use of their other senses. You aren’t allowed to move around, so you’re encouraged to use the (lighted) restrooms before settling in to your table. If you do have to get up after you’re seated, you simply call your server’s name and they’ll assist you. This state is perfect to visit all-year round, so naturally it’s at the top of the best last minute weekend vacations. With theme parks galore in Orlando alone, there’s sure to be a place or two able to welcome last-minute travelers like you. While in Florida, you can also head off to Miami and enjoy its beaches and exciting nightlife. For more adventure, you can book a day trip to Key West and enjoy its exotic locale. In Key West, make sure you set aside a portion of your day for fishing and shopping.

New England Coast
If you need a last-minute destination during the fall, there’s no better place to pick than the New England Coast. Its spectacular fall foliage is famous worldwide and you can enjoy it for free just by walking around. The same beauty shall greet you whether you’re traveling to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, or some other place in the New England coast. This is one of the most gorgeous places for last minute weekend vacations during the fall.

Paris
Lovers will always have Paris at any time of the year. Sure, it’s crowded all the time, but you don’t really notice things like that when you’re in love, do you? In Paris, you immediately know a couple of well-known attractions to visit and activities to check out. Besides the ever-famous Eiffel Tower, there’s also Versailles Palace to check out. You know as well that it’s imperative to give the street-lining cafes a try for authentic French cuisine, to walk around and just enjoy the romantic atmosphere and appreciate the works of Bohemian artists.

New York
Another city you won’t lack for excitement is the Big Apple. But beware, native New Yorkers don’t like it when people refer to NYC as the Big Apple. Because it’s a city that never sleeps, you’ll always find something to see or do no matter what time you get there. Just be careful of pickpockets. That’s one authentic NYC experience you can certainly do without!

Nevada
Like NYC, Nevada or Las Vegas in particular is a city that comes especially alive at night. If you think gambling is the only thing to do in Vegas, think again. You can drop by at Caesar’s Palace, for instance, at certain times in the evening and you’ll be treated by a special presentation…for free.

California
First stop: Hollywood. Walk around Beverly Hills, buy a map to know where the stars live, walk a couple of minutes more and you can spot a famous actor or two while shopping in any of the equally famous boutiques lining the streets. A food tour won’t be amiss because Cali is a melting pot of various cultures! You’ll see a Thai restaurant right next to a fine-dining French restaurant and a fastfood joint. There’s something for everyone at this last minute weekend vacations possibility.

London
History buffs wanting to do some last minute travel should immediately head to London. There, you can visit Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, and let’s not forget London Bridge, the ultimate star of nursery rhymes. If you have extra time, check out Thames Park – this used to be the most fashionable place for nobility to see and be seen.

Hawaii
Hawaii has nice tropical weather all year round. They may have stormy bouts once in a while, but the weather channel will easily let you know if visiting the islands now would be bad timing. In Hawaii, you can enjoy luaus after frolicking in the beach.

Egypt
Pyramids! There’s no need to think when you get to Egypt. You can also try riding a camel and visit the various museums found in Cairo.

Shanghai
Take advantage of the currently welcoming regime in China and see the secret wonders of this once-forbidden country. The language barrier could take a bit getting used to but the extremely cheap cost-of-living makes struggling with Mandarin worth every second.
